ABOUT MESILLA, NM

In the enchanting state of New Mexico, Mesilla is a charming neighborhood that transports visitors back in time. With a history dating back over a century, the heart of Mesilla still exudes the same old-world charm that once protected its residents from Apache attacks. Thick-walled adobe buildings line the streets, now housing an array of art galleries, restaurants, museums, and gift shops. The peaceful plaza, where tourists leisurely stroll, offers a glimpse into life as it was long ago, immersing visitors in the rich heritage of the Southwest.

Families from New Mexico and Paso del Norte settled in Mesilla after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. This unique blend of cultures contributed to the area's vibrant character and welcoming atmosphere. Mesilla played a significant role in history when the Gadsden Purchase was confirmed, adding the territory to the United States. During the Civil War, it served as the capital of the Confederate Arizona Territory, adding further historical importance to this quaint village.

Mesilla boasts a fascinating connection to the Wild West, home to the infamous Billy the Kid. The county courthouse witnessed his sentencing to death, although he managed to escape before it could be carried out. The courageous Pat Garrett, renowned for bringing Billy the Kid to justice, also met a tragic end outside Las Cruces. One can find his final resting place at a local cemetery.

Mesilla proudly preserves its heritage, with the picturesque San Albino Church standing as a testament to its history. Dating back to 1851, this iconic church remains one of the oldest in the Mesilla Valley. For those eager to delve deeper into the past, the Gadsden Museum is a treasure trove of Indian and Civil War relics and artifacts showcasing the unique culture of Southwest New Mexico.

Vibrant ristras, strings of red chile peppers adorning homes and businesses, greet visitors as they meander through the neighborhood. This colorful tradition symbolizes the warmth and hospitality for which the Southwest is renowned. Whether you're an ardent history enthusiast or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Mesilla's timeless allure and proximity to Las Cruces make it a must-visit destination that offers an authentic step back into another era.
