ABOUT LAS CRUCES, NM

Nestled in the picturesque Mesilla Valley, Las Cruces, the second-most populous city in New Mexico, is a vibrant hub of culture, history, and economic activity. With a population of 111,385 according to the 2020 census, this city serves as the seat of Doña Ana County and stands as the economic and geographic center of the Mesilla Valley. The stunning landscape is dominated by the Organ Mountains to the east, alongside the Doña Ana Mountains, Robledo Mountains, and the prominent Picacho Peak, collectively creating a breathtaking panorama that defines the city's aesthetic.

The town derived its name, "Las Cruces," from the three crosses just north of its boundaries. Despite changes, the city maintains a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary urban amenities.

Las Cruces' geographical location, situated 225 miles south of Albuquerque, 42 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas, and 41 miles north of the Mexican border at Sunland Park, contributes to a diverse climate. Warm summers, mild winters, and occasional dust storms characterize the area, making it an intriguing destination for residents and visitors alike.

Culturally rich, Las Cruces hosts annual events celebrating its heritage, including the Harvest Wine Festival, Renaissance ArtsFaire, and the Whole Enchilada Fiesta. Las Cruces is a charter city with a council–manager form of government, showcasing a commitment to effective governance. Public education is overseen by the Las Cruces Public School District, which includes charter schools and institutions like Alma d'arte and Doña Ana Community College.
