ABOUT DOÑA ANA, NM

Doña Ana, located in New Mexico, is a village with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. In 1843, settlers established the village as the first permanent Hispano settlement in southern New Mexico along El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Life in the region during that time was marked by challenges, including frequent attacks by Apache and Comanche raiders. Residents sought a new higher-ground location and founded Doña Ana's after a devastating flood in 1829. The village grew steadily and became an essential stop along El Camino Real, serving travelers and traders. Over the years, the town faced changes and challenges, but it remains a well-preserved example of a traditional 19th-century Hispano village. Today, Doña Ana continues to honor its heritage and serves as a reminder of the region's vibrant history.

The village's historic core, the Doña Ana Village Historic District, retains much of its original architecture and layout. The planners laid the streets in a traditional Spanish-Mexican grid pattern, and one-room adobe houses lined the roads. As families grew, they added additional rooms, giving the village its distinct appearance. The Catholic Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, also known as Our Lady of Candelaria, marks the heart of Doña Ana. Constructed in stages starting in 1852, the church combines Spanish, Mexican, and New Mexican architectural elements.

Although Doña Ana experienced changes over the years, including the decline of El Camino Real and the rise of neighboring towns, the village has managed to preserve its historical character. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s had a significant impact on the village's commercial prospects. However, the community has maintained its agricultural roots and architectural integrity. Today, visitors can stroll along the streets of Doña Ana, admiring the well-preserved buildings and experiencing the ambiance of a traditional rural Hispano village. The village's historic core, with its adobe structures and charming streets, offers a glimpse into the past and serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of Doña Ana and its connection to El Camino Real.
